Hexagon Metrology

Hexagon Metrology, Inc.

Hexagon Metrology is part of the Hexagon AB global measurement technologies group, which is focused exclusively on measurement technologies and solutions, to measure objects in one, two or three dimensions, to position and update objects, and time processes.

This tightly focused corporate strategy is the result of a complete transformation of Hexagon AB from a group of small engineering companies to a focused metrology company. Today, 85 percent of group sales are generated by companies that were not part of Hexagon in 2000. During the period of 2000-2008, Hexagon acquired about 60 companies, divested all assets not core to its new strategy, and nearly tripled sales.

The group has about 700 engineers engaged in research and development worldwide, and the group invests about thirteen percent of net sales in research and development. These investments are primarily focused on bringing marketable products to reality. The group has a patent portfolio of more than 1,700 active patents worldwide.

Worldwide group sales are approximately US$1.74 billion (2008). The Hexagon group is globally diversified and employs more than 8,400 people in 36 countries, and sells goods in more than 140 countries. Hexagon shares are publicly traded in Stockholm and Zurich.

Hexagon Metrology is the business area of Hexagon AB that focuses on dimensional measuring technology for industrial purposes. This part of the business focuses on ensuring the dimensions of products "as made" conform to the original design intent (typically, the computer-aided-design (CAD) model).

Hexagon Metrology is the world's largest player in the dimensional metrology segment for industrial purposes, and offers products in all major product categories and subcategories in the market, measuring things as small as medical screws and watch parts to as large as an assembled aircraft.

Hexagon Metrology is the corporate umbrella under which we develop, manufacture, and sell numerous familiar brands and badges in the industrial measurement market. Our installed base encompasses millions of tools and machines, and tens of thousands of seats of software.

Major brands and product categories include:

  • TESA Brand 1D and 2D Hand Tools
  • TESA Brand 2D and 3D Benchtop Measuring Systems, Under the Brand TESA
  • Brown & Sharpe, DEA, Leitz and Sheffield Brand 3D Coordinate Measuring Machines
  • ROMER Brand Portable Arm Measuring Machines
  • Leica Laser Trackers and Total Stations
  • Brown & Sharpe and TESA 2D and 3D Video Measuring Machines
  • CogniTens White Light Measuring Machines
  • TESA and Leitz Probes for CMMs
  • M&H Probes for Machine Tools
  • PC-DMIS and Quindos Metrology Software

Hexagon Metrology's worldwide customer base ranges from the largest manufacturers such as aircraft, automotive, heavy equipment and defense OEMs, plus all sub-tiers of these industries, down to job shops. Hexagon Metrology serves over 125 distinct industries with our products and services.

Hexagon Metrology currently has fourteen manufacturing facilities in operation on four continents, and nearly sixty sales and service locations worldwide, including twelve in North America. Hexagon's philosophy of customer support is to offer decentralized, and thus customer localized, support and services. Our sales, service, and support teams are located in local markets worldwide, which allow quick response to customer requirements.

The company maintains ISO/IEC 17025:2005 accreditation for field calibration, as well as being ISO 9001:2000, ISO 14001:2004, and OHSAS 18001:2007 accredited. The company maintains three ISO/IEC 17025:2005 accredited calibration labs in North America.

Finally, we are the largest metrology services provider in North America. This encompasses the obvious definition of service and support of the installed base of machines, but to Hexagon Metrology, "services" has a far wider scope. Services involve an opportunity where we can use our human capital to engage the customer and help make their operation more effective and productive. This could include specialized training, system integration, specialized software programming, contract inspection, temporary to full-time staffing contracts, reverse engineering—nearly anything where our specialized expertise meets market need.
